Dimensional Weight Explained for Online Sellers
Why large lightweight packages can be billed above their scale weight.
Why package size changes the bill
Carriers have limited vehicle and aircraft space, so a large lightweight parcel can cost more to move than its scale weight suggests. Dimensional weight converts package volume into a comparable billing weight.
How the calculation works
Multiply length, width and height using the units required by the carrier, then divide by the applicable dimensional divisor. The billed weight is commonly the greater of dimensional and actual weight after carrier rounding rules are applied.
Reduce cost without risking damage
Measure the packed parcel, not the product listing dimensions. Test smaller cartons, reduce empty fill and review whether a packaging change moves the shipment into a lower billed-weight tier. Always verify the current divisor and rounding method for the service used.
