Under the hood

Understand the number

Use the formula and notes below to check whether the result fits your real operating conditions.

Formula
Customs Value = Goods + Freight + Insurance + Dutiable Additions; Duty = Customs Value × Duty Rate; Import Tax = (Customs Value + Duty + Excise) × Import Tax Rate
Variables
HS code
The internationally harmonized product classification. Countries may extend the first six digits with national tariff lines.
Customs value
The declared valuation base used by customs; entered freight, insurance and additions are included in this planning estimate.
Duty rate
The current rate verified for the product, origin, destination and trade preference in an official tariff database.
Import tax base
This model adds customs value, duty and excise before applying the entered import VAT or GST rate.
How to use it

Classify the product and verify the destination country’s national tariff line; a six-digit HS heading alone may not determine the final rate.

Check origin rules and preferential proof before using a free-trade-agreement rate. Otherwise use the applicable normal rate.

Enter every amount in the same currency and compare the estimate with the customs broker’s declaration before shipping.

Limitations

This is a planning model, not a live tariff ruling. It does not determine classification, customs valuation adjustments, anti-dumping duties, quotas, trade remedies, de minimis rules or preferential origin eligibility. National tax bases also vary. Verify the HS code, valuation and rates with the destination customs authority or a licensed customs broker.
